Ms. Halvorson
Ms. Halvorson graduated from Augsburg College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She later went back to Augsburg's Weekend College Program to obtain an Elementary Education License. She obtained her Masters of Arts in Gifted, Talented and Differentiated Education from the University of St. Thomas. Ms. Halvorson has been an intermediate teacher at Como Park Elementary School since 1999. She was a Semifinalist for Minnesota Teacher of the Year in 2018.
Prior to entering the educational environment, Ms. Halvorson managed an architectural firm, did marketing in a CD-Rom publishing firm, and provided support to managers in a big six accounting firm. Her understanding of the work world and collaboration needed to manage projects in many environments has been important in her classroom experiences and helped her develop students that are ready to take on challenges in a rigorous academic environment and given those students an opportunity to learn collaboration on many levels.
Ms. Halvorson's passion is helping students to develop and nurture a love of learning and make academic and social gains during fourth grade. She loves using technology in her classroom and in all subject areas to help engage students and provide multiple modalitiies for students to show what they have learned. She also believes that students need to learn to work independently as well as collaboratively and this is reflected in her classroom and her ability to develop an engaged community of student learners. She provides a rigorous academic environment but supports students so they can achieve at every level. Ms. Halvorson also believes that growth mindset and leadership skills are integral in student learning and achievement and works with her student on many activities in the community to develop leadership skills in her students.
She holds students accountable and truly believes that an effective classroom provides an environment rich in academic and social learning, provides student collaboration experiences, and allows students to be part of a positive classroom experience.
Ms. Halvorson is co-chair with Ms. Noble-Olson on the Como Carnival held every Spring at our school! Their goal is to create a fun, inexpensive way for Como staff, students, families, neighbors and the community-at-large, to come together to celebrate another successful school year!
Ms. Halvorson is originally from Oshkosh, Wisconsin but moved to St. Paul permanently after college graduation. She has a wonderful husband and two grown sons that she enjoys spending time with. Her dog Zoe keeps her very busy with morning and evening walks! Ms. Halvorson loves to read, garden, vacation to far away places, hike, kayak, workout, oil/acrylic paint, make photo books, bake and cook! She has lots of interests and keeps very busy!
